HEART DISEASE & STROKE

In Wharton, heart disease and stroke was the focus of screenings and health assessments far residents. Members of the community were encouraged to participate in cholesterol and bland pressure screenings and a comprehensive health risk appraisal as part of an early detection effort to identify individuals at risk far heart disease and stroke.

"Heart disease is the number one killer in our community, and strokes are the Number three cause of death in bath counties," says Carolyn Inhoffer Pram the American Heart Association and member of the Trust. "Our assessment that mare than half of the residents in Morris and

Sussex, counties had at least one of the risk factors that contributes to heart disease or stroke. If we can helix people became more aware of their personal risk factors, we've taken in attempting to reduce the number of deaths from cardiac disease."

Events held at St. Mary's School and Kite Aid Pharmacy in Wharton, screened dozens of residents for risk factors. Educational programs, conducted by cardiac specialists, far women arid school children addressed prevention and lifestyle habits to help them stay heart healthy.
