HEART
DISEASE AND STROKE
This Action
Team began its efforts with the goal of reducing risk factors for
cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes,
tobacco use and sedentary lifestyles. Currently, 6.4 % of Morris
and Sussex residents have at least one of these risk factors. Heart
disease is the leading cause of death in the area with about 150
deaths per 100,000 residents. The Action Team is anchored by a partnership
of the American Heart Association, local cardiologists, Merck &
Co., Inc., Saint Clare's Hospital and the Wharton Board of Health.
Our goal is to reduce the
number of people with these risk factors through education and prevention
programs.
